The Russian Chemical Complex: Main Road Milestones

Russia strongly needs a developed and diversified chemical industry in order to provide a balanced and efficient growth of its national economy. However, the production structure of the domestic chemical industry, which was shaped in the period of centrally planned socialist economy, is dominated by resource-intensive and large scale production operations which build their competitiveness on low-cost, compared with global prices, natural and energy resources. A rapid privatization of the chemical industry has only enhanced the inter-industry disproportion.

Review of the Moscow Chemical Industry
Despite its disadvantageous geographical position and full lack of feedstock resources, the chemical production complex of Moscow has been outpacing other industries of the city by its output.

Operational Results of Synthetic Rubber Industry in 2004
The amount of synthetic rubber manufactured in Russia in 2004 exceeded the 2003 output by 4.1 %. Further development of the industry, however, is restrained by the shortage of monomer feedstock. In this connection, the Sintezkauchuk Association proposes to introduce, as soon as possible, a new technology based on the use of rare-earth catalysts at all polyisoprene manufacturing enterprises.

Situation in Asia-Pacific Chemical Market
Despite the tsunami aftermath, the GNP growth in most Asian countries in 2004 has noticeably exceeded the forecasts. Analysts explain a slight decline in net incomes registered by a number of companies by growing wages and intensified R&D activity.

Nefis - Kalina: 1:1
Nefis-Cosmetics of Kazan has been ordered by the court to pay 3 million rubles penalty for the rollout of a cosmetic product branded "Ìèëåíüêàÿ ôåÿ". The court has ruled the brand can be mistaken for the cosmetic product "Ìàëåíüêàÿ ôåÿ " already marketed by Kalina. Few people noticed that "Ìèëåíüêàÿ ôåÿ" was retaliation to competitor's "TriMax" face powder, which sounds very much like "BiMax" power marketed by Nefis.
